A rewrite of an old poem, Ode To Sleep.

SANDMAN

You obliterate the sky and dull the clamour of the day,

lighting my escape route so that I can slip away.

You merge my unfenced, jumping sheep

into woolly balls of numbers; relieve my acts

of clumsy when a state of faint encumbers.

With arms open like a mother’s, you fit perfectly

my need: stocks of good, attempts at beauty,

nurtured gently by your feed.

You lay me like a lover, drape with flags

of blinding white.  Pills of bitterness and unresolve

melt on tongue and taste of light.

Weak and sinking deeper, my voice is lost

in waves and streams – but then my laughter

wakes out loud in chambers of your dreams.

A great piece. I had to read it twice so I could appreciate all the little moments that make up the big one. The second verse is witty and made me laugh outloud. Refreshing format for the rhyme, too. Hugs,
Sheila

These are the best lines of the poem because they actually tell what the Sandman does when he comes to call. But I keep thinking he missed my house because I only nap, I never sleep, sleep. This is very nicely written and thought out. Thank you for sharing.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

I long for the sandman at evening call. These days he seems evasive. Your poem makes me feel dreamy and ready to sleep.
Captivating poetry, Kate!

Peace, love and light,
Amber

Something happened the first time I tried to review this poem and my review simply vanished... It must be Sandman! Anyway, I love your opening lines, the right mood and imagery welcome the reader. Obliterating, slipping away, there is such precision in your choice of verbs here. At the end of your poem, I am left in a state of comfort and bliss, thinking that this must be the equivalent in words of a good night's sleep.

I was with you till the very last line. That's when I get a elbow poke in the ribs from my wife, the sandwoman. I guess chamber laughing and snoring are not exactly the same. Patrick

What intimate masterful weaving here, so close to nirvana!

Kate, I've been snowed in so have not gotten to the post yet, but I can't wait! I'll listen as soon as it comes... ;+ )

Artful in the best sense, Kate, not arty;
and please, like Gene asks, put in a good word
for me..if only i could get a good night's sleep,
can't remember the last time; this waking up business
every ten minutes has to stop...it will, it will some day.
No, your poem doesn't make me blue, your work never does
because it's just so so good.

I love the way you expressed the "Sandman's" effect from the opening lines so well crafted. Brilliant work...you must know that. You, Kate have entered my world. That world of dreams where anything and everything happens.

Our outlet for the weary days of life is our dreams. We can slip through a door if the sandman passes us a key and enter a realm of love, laughter and hope. Oh yes, sometimes we also find terror and fear but for myself the sandman is usually more benevolent. Thanks for sharing such an enchanting poem Kate.

Truly a fine ode to the sandman, Kate. Very nicely expressed. Coincidentally, I wrote about a "sandman" in a short story posted here at AD. Your tribute would not fit his character I'm afraid. Love and best wishes,
