I received a publisher's poetry postcard in the mail this morning. It was a picture of a bottle on a table in a darkened room, filled with notes. The quote is as follows:

"Not all dark thoughts need to be expressed.
Know that I love you. Forget the rest."

... words from "Night at the Met" by Garrison Keillor. This poem is the result.

STOPPERED LOVE

I see you there – darkened room, your curtains wide,

a frame to midnight neon skies.  The place quite clear

of all but air; just scrubbed pine table, sideboard,

creaking chair.  Silence hangs heavy, tired sighs draw

it in; your eyes on lone bottle, long-emptied of gin,

that now slowly fills with old envelope scraps, torn

paper, peeled layers of soaked, beery mats –

whatever creased thoughts can be scratched upon

are feathery curls (it doesn’t take long) to build

up the word-pile that’s near-reaching the top with

each delicate pause, every uttered full stop.

Spent time has fast-beggared some old, lucid thoughts,

spun them like lost coins, slipped words into knots.

Though black as tar-pitch is outside and within,

Midas grasps bottle’s neck, spills light fingers down in

upon this lexicon of love, fear, exasperation, hate:

these stirrings of feeling locked-fast by life’s gate.

Warm-fed you are still by this slow-burning fuel and

of each hot-licking flame you have never your fill

but wait patient and calm ‘til some magic combusts

this bottled intent into sprayed rainbows of glass

that then form the window giving onto the dream

whose pains you so easily up-and-fly in-between

to be on that beach where each bottled message goes;

to be safe in the hands of the one person that knows.

I see you there – where thieving dark is no more:

always-plain-daylight gilds that warm, endless shore.

Words stopped in dark bottles may yet be expressed:

What you feel, that is all – and your brightly-lit best.

Warm and intimate lines that make me think. What kind of dark bottles do I use? And where do I keep them? Your poem is imaginative and rich, with the taste of an endless self-discovery of our feelings.

I am really blown away Kate. I am. This is a surreal altruistic piece that tells of the human condition the way it is, not how it should be. The human condition is frail, and our screams are like the banshee's wail, but we know there is a light at the end of the tunnel called Jesus. He will guide us through our life, no matter if we are happy, sad, lonely, depressed, or just otherwise out of it. When we have the Lord our God through His son Jesus, then we have everything. Thank you sharing, Kate. I really enjoyed reading because I can identify with each word.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

Kate, this is beautifully written. Very few poems make me want to pick up a pen and create (because I'm not normally inspired that way) but this one does. Impressive writing!

I have read this a few times. I have not been in the right frame of mind to properly comment. Tonight, I am relaxed and open and now some things just pop out at me about this poem. What really stands out is the idea of "messages in a bottle" thrown out to sea to find a long lost lover..perhaps there is a bit of this in this poem, but also it seems a bit sad like a lost love has been accepted as that, "a loss".. Just a glimmer of hope that that lost love may retrieve a message from a bottle and reunite with that lost lover.

Well anyway, I truly enjoy reading your work this time around..
Much peace, love and light,
Amber

The condensing of thought and emotion is matched
by the layered writing, fruity and rich as the best cake.
Just a thought...what if the card had read 'i want to see
you on the roof in five minutes'?
Glorious work, Kate.

Strange. I nearly wrote to you today with a note saying... 'Be the enemy of hurtful thoughts!'

Every line is so full of imagery. It does have a dark feel, I almost hear a sinister whispering voice. Then Kaput, it's full of light.
Your poetry is in a class of its own.

A bit different from you regular poems, and it ages with each sentence like whiskey in a keg, and you savor the meaning as if its the last dregs.

I love this; I find it some full of meaning to which I can relate, and your inspired verses are wonderfully apt, Kate. Thank you for sharing this gift. Love and best wishes to you,
