This is work from an experimental poetry workshop I attended yesterday. The image of the sculpture is subject to copyright, but is Google-able if you would like to actually see what this "looks like"! Otherwise, I'm told the name of the game is "entering into the moment of experience", so to speak! Anyways, see what you make of it... xx

Stringed Figure (Curlew) Version II 1956

Sculpture of brass and string –

Dame Barbara Hepworth

 

 

                               songbird

 

swooping blades set upon earth’s plinth

                                                threading skies topmost note

 

tied inland to lay-lines latitudes longitudes

                            true north of lyre lutes and finger-cymbals

 

                              

                               oxygen green soaring heart inverted

 

girdle bone brass-decorated harness

                                           twisted metal bursting iron stays

                                                                               give me air

                                   

 

                               waterbird waterwings

 

gulliver lilliputian-pinned

                                                              balanced against the

wind

                                                                             heed my cry

The sculpture looks somewhat like the outside of the Sydney opera House in Sydney, New South Wales, Autralia. The words remind me of what it would be like to be in heaven with music all the time and no worries. Thank you, Kate, for posing this delightful piece.

Kate, this is unique and beautiful, The songbird, waterwings imagined...I used to live in Brooklyn Heights,NY...sculpture reminded me of the fast cab rides home over the bridge at odd hours...cabs hated that because they weren't sure they would get a fare back....totally off topic and daydreaming..... I really liked your poem.

Kate, you soar. Dame Barbara should frame this in brass and
string and hang next to her sculpture. I wonder what she (or
you) would do with a gull, preferrably the laughing gull.
It appears to me, Ms Burnside, that you succeeded beautifully
in putting music to your cry. -gene.

You nailed the subject firmly and gripped it steadfastly as you continued with the description. Had to look up plinth, and it was perfectly used. This, "gulliver lilliputian-pinned" caught me unawares and delightfully so.



I would say that that you entered into the moment of experience quite well, Kate, and kicked ass.
