I've just enjoyed the immense privilege of being involved in the Opening Ceremony of the new Derry-Londonderry Peace Bridge in Northern Ireland. This lyric was set to music by composer, Ian Wilson, as part of the day's grand festivities and celebrations. Brief news coverage about the event can be found here:

HOVER BIRD

No more the masts of tall ships

hoist an early morning sky;

poised wings of steel white bird

stretch bog to bank where former

merchant walls rose high

and marching feet were ranked.

Thicker than muscled water

the wires that hold this will to fly

in place: hands withdrawn now

reach across again and knit;

accord is bound by bridge’s

harp-stringed grace.

Peace no more a Gulliver,

Lilliputian-pinned; now this

songbird soars on children’s

laughter, their dancing back

and forth on changing winds.

I live off of a street named Mast, named for the ship masts harvested in the area. Really interesting imagery, too, Kate.

What a fine thing, to have your own poem, like the bridge, poised between two cities like Lilliput and Blefusco. If you do have a big head, you deserved it. The lyrics are strong and visually stunning. Is that last "their" supposed to be "they're"? Just pondering how that word alone changes the mental picture. --Charlie

Glorious in the light of stirred imaginations Kate. Your poem that is. Dramatic as the bridge itself is, your words gave it life and purpose beyond its steely constructed image. Bravo. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

LOL EdK!!! Big HEAD you mean, Dad?!!! :)) Nearly had the Frankenstein nose and mouth to go with it as I took a bad fall at the airport on the way out, so big hat was almost obligatory; but no, happily no mugshots as I was waaaaaaaaaaaay down the pecking order of things. Wore me travel clothes to cover up me knees, too - otherwise my bright floral frock might have been a real smack in the eye! Thanks for viewing! K xx

it's up to the people to walk across the bridge to peace ... a fragile situation hopefully will be fortified by the people's will ....

congrats on your poem being applied to Wilson's music ... must have been a great time ... hope your feeling better from your fall ...

Congratulations, Kate! I am very proud for you. Taking the bridge and history you managed to weave it all together in a way that left me smiling at the immensity of the "steel white bird." From the photo the bridge is beautiful. From your poem/lyrics it shines.

Good to see you again, and it's about time.
