Louis MacNeice's poem, "Snow", is one that I have seasonally been dwelling upon recently; my life is pretty "various" right now and shows every sign of continuing to be so well into 2012!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, dear Friends, and may you know the beauty of the unknowable and indefinable which keeps us questing as poets in the strangely bizarre times that are to come....

"World is crazier and more of it than we think,
Incorrigibly plural. I peel and portion
A tangerine and spit the pips and feel
The drunkenness of things being various."

MacNeice, "Snow"

JIGSAW

So simple at the start:

just two parts, male and female,

slotting together like train tracks;

one chance meeting

on the Orient Express.

Then pieces became many,

their scene forever expanding –

from feather-imaged firmaments

to fumes and spumes of brimstone

stoked by pitchforks from beneath.

Each faint smut of Milky Way and

cresting curl of fathoms could be

placed in a wink of an eye;

but one piece of perfect blue still has

notched, uncharted coastline;

awaits some strange, all-seeing cunning

to make its edges fit.

It's difficult not to agree, Kate, this poem is almost a piece of evidence, a proof of the theorem. A lovely and lively demonstration. And thank you for sharing "Snow", I love it.

That last verse is a zinger, Kate--the beauty of wonder. And why should we always have the whole picture? Or is that even possible? I too got puzzles for Christmas-- 0ne box with 10 Kinkaid puzzles. So I went on a bananza of puzzle fitting, stacking one completed puzzle on top of the next, and I noticed that all the puzzles that were a similar size had been cut by the same dye (press?). So, I'm thinking, maybe I should have a little fun now, piecing different puzzle-pics together to make a new kind of Picasso/Kinkaid pic? What would that be like?-- A summer cottage door floating on a gondola down the crashing Maine coast? It could be fun... CA

Oooh, I love puzzles!
Jigsaw puzzles have been an underlying theme within our household this Christmas, piecing together the fragments of jungles and oceans. Between past and future these puzzles seem to change and shift even as they are pieced together.
May each notch fit in 2012!
Blessings and Happy New Year,
Christine

I think you're right, and I think we all need to be prepared for pieces that may not seem to fit at all. And Happy New Year, To You.

If you work a jigsaw puzzle enough times the edges will mate. Never mind that the red leaf abuts the blue bird and the clouds are in the trees. Cunning is overrated when all that matters is a fit. Oh sure, now you want the perfect fit;-)Patrick

coincidentally- so simple at the end ...

that singularity of perspective is the piece that allows the puzzle to see itself completed ... at that point, there are no edges only the totality of its being ... great work, Kate ... it made my synapses fall into place ...

Kate,
Life is like a jigsaw puzzle. You are always finding the pieces and trying to figure out just where they fit into the whole picture. I love this poem to start the New Year out. One of your very best.
May the spirit of the season stay with you for this New Year and may peace, love and light fill your world,
Amber

"Jigsaw" is, I think, Kate, at the top of your poetry collection, and that is saying a lot, I know, for you shine continuously.

Still. this one edges out others because you have taken on life, love, sex, man and woman and have, in just a few short verses, kicked ass.

To end this masterpiece with a missing element is bold and cunningly smart. Nothing is ever as we think it is, there are always, "always," variables.
