MIST

What does it take to be mist?

The presence of something not quite right –

like rain falling upwards?

Clouds of warm breath but no words?

Death but not departure?

A distant horizon’s watery exchange?

The haze of a name that burns from your tongue

like mown grass in a noonday sun?

Initials in steam on a glass?

A figure lost to eye-brimming tears

on love’s ever-shrouded pinnacle

is all that it takes to be missed.

Wonderful piece of romanticism that doesn't rely on the obvious. Well done.

Love this... Can't even say why it captured me like it did, but it did, and I loved it. :)

I especially loved the word play on mist/missed

Yes, Kate, yes, that is all it takes to be mist.

Kate, raw emotions are most difficult to express in a way that leave no doubt in the reader's mind as to what you mean -- you have superbly evidenced that ability with this rendering -- it is a bravo moment my dear friend -- "mist", love fading like the morning dew -- this is another library piece for this reader -- may peace and joy be always with you -- Jon Michael

I am always mystified by your unique ability to describe every day circumstance in such eloquent terms. Misty compared to my musty....alas Mister Mustard mistakes mist for must and missed what must have been marvelously musty mist. (Real men don't mist unless they must) Patrick

The watery essence of this poem barely hides the depth of feelings that one can only imagine. I like the way you question the reader and help him/her guess the true nature of missing. A highly intuitive approach! :)

You played Misty for me. A beautiful subject for a poem. I like the twist at the end.

There is an understated eloquence in the almost mystical connection this poem makes between the here and now and the that which cannot quite manage to be that is at once spectral and haunting and at the same time visceral and edgy... you've captured the essence of ether in just a few short stanzas (voila) and you make it look so easy, but it is not... and you've also evoked a sensation I am sure will be unsettling to many... let's see... what's more? I'm sure I missed something...

An artfully presented poem filled with multi-dimensional metaphors!
A poignant, elegant poem, so full of feeling...
And I'm feeling quite misty myself tonight!
