GUARDIAN

All those times

you slipped out the front door

as I came in the back;

you arrived at the bar ahead of me

and ordered my drink;

you moved away from the painting

having noted the exact same detail

that then catches my eye

and made off in the cab

I just managed to hail

or got up to leave a seat so I could

sit on the rush-hour train home…

Through the sleight of hand of traffic

and the hoodwink dodge of stars,

how many times have you pulled me

from some distant cosmic wreckage

that I’ve never known I’ve caused

or trapped my coat in a door

to prevent a more serious mishap?

Living before me and after me

the life I’ve never met :

my lives of black cat bones.

Kate, I find it hard to believe that many do not believe in angels and with that in mine I will guess that they have never encountered
any. Lovely pen.

Always,
Deborah

So true! I love that you pay tribute to that unseen, but felt, hand in our lives that protects, lifts and sustains us... probably more than we will ever know.
When my oldest son was about 3 years old he brought me a loaf of banana bread and a nice long sharp knife to cut it with... holding the blade of his hand in his pudgy little hand. His sister, knowing that he shouldn't have a knife, grabbed the handle and quickly pulled it from his hand...telling him he shouldn't have a knife! Miraculously, he had not one drop of blood or even a scratch on the palm of his hand. Someday, when I meet an angel in heaven who has a scar on the palm of their hand, I will know I have met my son's guardian angel who protected him that day. :)

There seems to be some divine connection going in this. We often become what we think we are, our surroundings often behave as we believe they would be; the sense of being protected is as original as any birth or any moment. Well written, Kate!

A fine tribute to that hidden protective hand we all have felt on this insane journey called life...
Well said, Kate! & long live your black cat bones!

simply nothing else like it... merely marvelous (to understate it)... kind of like the kinesthetic equivalent of finishing someone's sentences... only much, much more... oh, well done, Kate...

Be well and at peace with all.

What a wonderful way to describe the reality of dimmensions that we cannot see, save they allow it so...They are there, acting on our behalf, we know when they have done something sometimes, but sadly alot of times we take for granted our winged warriors/guardians.
Love this Kate, ty & much blessings to you

Guardians are marvelous to have around, as are angels, and I know they've saved me more than once.

Timing is everything, or so it would seem. Lucky stars, angels and guardians making that appointment you never want to keep. Patrick

So interestingly captivating, Kate. If angels had not saved me (many times from myself even) during the course of this journey, I honestly don't know where I'd be today. Thank you. Love and best wishes,

Regis

An alternative deja vu reversed been-there-done-that shadow that follows at the heels. Sentinel and sentimental. Mentor or protector, twin opposite or just good reflective poetry puts a literary spin on Burnside word art...Kate good to read you again.

Love this. The guardian, of course, saving Kate from mishap and taking the fall for the black cat's bones. And we, of course know how many lives that entails. This was just a fine, snappy, thinking person's poem, I thoroughly enjoyed it, my friend.

Resiliency, trust, and love envelops this poem, my dear, Kate. Sounds to me like someone has your back no matter what. It is a good thing to be able to have someone in your life that you can trust with your own life. Keep on bouncing back and always remember to breath on the way back and know that "That was a close one", be safe, be loved, and be the Kate we all love.

Peace, love and light,
Amber
