She had promised to come
After the sun kissed the earth- bent low
And the night scattered stars
In the sky, in a faint glow
He sits against the tree on which
An arrow carved through his, her heart
Where they had first kissed
Promising never to part
The moon rises up from the grove
A gentle whispering balmy breeze
Is the only sound heard
As it glides by caressing the trees
What use the magic moon?
Its silken moonbeams naught
For a lonely languid lover
So hopeful- yet so distraught
Hope flickers like a candle
In the wind-for her. Oh! So sweet!
Sleep now caresses his weary brow
He dreams- she's in his arms! They meet.
I sense a great longing. Unfortunately, only fulfilled in dreams.
Last night I listed again, to Roy Orbison singing that classic, Only the Lonely. I find it fitting your poem beautifully. But then, his In Dreams, fits the last two lines well.
