About Vocabulary

Poem Artwork

Because of Odin Roark's 'Lexiconic Starvation' contribution to AD this morning, I am compelled to post a 1983 poem I wrote after having read Jack London's Martin Eden and the vocabulary words I had to look up during that reading experience, making sure the definitions made sense in my use of them.

           A Vignette

I sit and think of paltry things,
of tawdry people who
politely boast their platitudes;
these self-impressions to renew,
their inwardly-focused certitudes.

I see holographs of smug pretenses
cloaked with meretricious ruse,
each disconcerting insolence --
the henchmens' ecclesiastic abuse;
dogmatic admonitions that
lie curled at their boots,
abysmal and capricious.

The avaricious ones palliate
their eccentric complacencies
with epithets inveterate
that they vindicate prodigiously.

Eliciting facetious proclivities,
they upbraid antagonistic heretic's
antithesis as apparitions
filled with virulence,
inveigling the venerable loyalties
from states of inexorable
countenance to erratic perils
of repudiated liberals.

I extrapolate a ribald paradox
between the lugubrious bourgeoisie
and the facile avant-garde to be
a virulent vexation.

Love Jack London. Great collection of words. Some good moments of alliteration, too. "virulence, inveigling the venerable loyalties," (-: Enjoyed this, Diana. Thanks for sharing. Peace.... rlc

Wow! I have always loved words so this creation of yours is "right up my alley." And you have presented a fine lesson in morphology. Thank you, Diana. Love, peace, and blessings to you,

Regis. 🙏🌸

That was really creative! Made me wonder if I was a "repudiated liberal" or not? You are at your best after reading Jack London. Makes me wish I had read more of him.

Fortunately, there was only one word that I would have to look up. Based on my knowledge of the words, some of the phrases were nonsensical. So I would have to consider the piece to be a satire of the use of highfalutin (now there's a word that should be used more often) language.

Welcome! The poems in this beautifully bound book are a result of over twenty years of observations. Observations of the world around us and on the telecommunications network. All of the hate, love, heroism, disasters, and those who help. Beautif
