~ Under The Sky ~
Lying under the sky
remembering smells
and sounds of home
Grass that is green and lush
with trees and singing birds
the sounds of children
playing ball in the park
where once I played
The smells of
mom’s home cooking
the sounds of the church bells
as the choir sings
These thoughts I remember
as here I lay
under a foreign sky
in a ditch made of sand
above me the clouds
are billowing black smoke
from incendiary bombs
the sounds filling the air
are gunfire
I didn’t hear the sound
of the bullet that hit me
Now I am laying here
under a foreign sky
my eyes wide open
unseeing

I didn't expect that ending--WOW. Powerful, jarring write that will linger for a while...thank you.
