~ A Winter Day ~

The dark came down

on this winters eve

to the sound of howling wind

and pelting rain

Morning brought large snowflakes

falling down in absolute silence

A perfect stillness

solitude in the heart of a snowstorm

This is the thin time

the world turns inward

and the chilling air grows thick

with dreams and mystery

The sky goes from a sharp clear cold

where stars burn bright and close

to the pink-gray clouds

that enfolds the land

with the promise of more snow

Winter has come

the season of fire

candles and hearth fires

that lovely leaping paradox

contained but never tamed

At a safe distance it warms and enchants

and when sitting around a fire

in the dark

all  truths can be told

and heard in safety

Dear Carole,

I am one who does not care for winter because the cold attacks my body (I have fibromyalgia) yet your poem makes it a beautiful season.

Jude used the word tapestry to describe this work of yours...which I believe is a fit analogy. This is a tightly woven and wonderful thing...beautiful and warming, regardless of the wintery subject.

What a lovely and haunting poem about the metamorphing of rain to snow as winter eases into view. The last four line especially affected me.
