~ The Veranda ~

I picture four women on a veranda

four Southern women in straw colored hats

and gauzy dresses with lace covered fans

They were having a conversation,

and it was hot

their hankies were tucked in cleavages

where eternal trickles of perspiration ran

from the female breast bone to

exotic vacation spots

that Southern men often dream about

These Southern ladies were a mixture

of cotton candy and pink champagne

part calico choir girl

and part satin dance hall doll

They were sweet smelling, coy, cunning

voluminous, veracious, delicious

these earth sisters, these rebel mothers

they’re vexing, sexy and pernicious

Women who belonged to another time

where writing a letter was by

an exquisite hand

before flirting became extinct

and ladies still blushed behind their fans

Like a whim of Scarlet’s

they turned suddenly

as their conversation waned

shutting the door with the bolt of a latch

Leaving behind the longing to join them, but instead only an

abandoned handkerchief

to be picked up

to savor the perfumed shadows

of these women, these Southern women

E x e l l e n t. Belles must have sat a long time for you to
capture them this well. But of course they were used to posing.
Made an art of it! Tell you a secret: the Belle still lives.
I have Southern friends who have retained the best of the breed's traits and habits. They may wear jogging suits and running shoes, but
their hair is done and their nails are impeccable. . .yet they can
type 100 words a minute and cuss like. . .nevermind. They are
real, honest-to-god steel magnolias, I'm sayin'. Every one of them would love your poem! Gotta see if I can catch one & send 'er over.
Won't be easy, tell ya that. Thanks for the great read! Now go get yo parasol an' sally oan down t'the pahk. Hear there's a
'limmonade' stan'. {Or is it julep?} 'Pea' <3

I like the way your writings have recently gone romantic and kind of memoric (I know that's not a word, but it fits <grin>). Nostalgic write of a time and women whom most of us have seen only in movies, but about which we romanticize. Well done.

Carole,

Your imagery is fantastic. I like these lines :
"their hankies were tucked in cleavages
where eternal trickles of perspiration ran
from the female breast bone to
exotic vacation spots
that Southern men often dream about"

Sometimes dreams do come true. Anyway, excellent write.

And fickle they were. That's just how those southern belles behave. Well done.

Well! What could we do with that pretty, perfumed hanky. We'll think of something. VERY nice poetry, loved your ambience.

All I need is a mint julep to go along with this teasing southern belle poem.
