~ Forgotten Hero ~

He slumps head down

in a doorway

forlorn, weary and ill

His moment of glory forgotten

in a foreign battle upon a hill

The shadows of memories linger on

in the ghosts of buddies

who lay slaughtered and dead

He is filled with regrets

for things he left unsaid

On that day valiantly he fired

trying to save his stricken friends

until only he survived

Now the nightmares never end

and the country he defended

soon forgot him

just another vagrant, they all say

and nobody even remembers

that they called him

a hero that day

Wonderfully done. . .and so, so sad. Maddening! America used to honor her veterans, if I am not mistaken. After all, they saved us! What happened that convinced government 'leaders' to withdraw support? Was it the Vietnam fiasco that started the ball rolling downhill? You have described the plight of men who served and were abandoned so well, Carole. Bless you for reminding us that we need to do something. The sooner, the better! Love, 'Pea'

Well penned Carole
Your passion flows like a gentle stream
in this one
You are, like an understanding Angel
For the poor vets that roam the streets of despair

Love & peace

We so often cheer them off to war, and woefully forget and neglect them when they return. And we truly need to change society's attitudes towards these once upon a time heroes.

An emotional write for our forgotten and neglected heroes

This is sad and true and so wrong-it makes me irate when soldiers are treated this way, forgotten- so many are proud that they defend our way of life, then treat them like this when they come home- thanks for writing this.

Such an effective and stirring write. It is so sad that heroism is soon forgotten.

Yep. And the same will be said about the heroes of this war. My uncle survived the Bataan Death March, came home a broken man. Died alone in a nursing home in Ft. Worth, Texas. I've never forgiven my family for deserting him. Never will.

There are soooooo many illogical ironies in war. This was very deep felt. I imagine it brought some tears as you penned it.

Oh how powerful and excellent this is Carol, and sadly, all too true, outstanding.
