*~The Endless Goodbye~* *(updated)* *If only I would have known* *she would forget my face* *I would have spent more time* *building memories* *for her heart to embrace* *A mother should remember* *or so I thought* *until we were faced with* *the endless goodbye* *Her thoughts became muddled* *as memories slipped away* *This insidious thief does not ride in* *on a horse of many colors* *It slips in silently, yet is quite bold* *strutting around unobserved* *until it gets a good hold* *Then with the flip of a switch* *by an unseen hand* *the light in her eyes just dimmed* *until it ceased to be* *She slowly slipped into* *a world of shadows* *her mind unable to see* *Taking the greatest pleasure* *it forces the unexpected into early old age* *this absconder of memories* *delights in erasing a life�s history* *Then as it takes them one by one* *this uninvited pillager of dreams* *leaving only empty pages behind* *Last night she was released* *from her inner darkness* *to travel where no boundaries exist* *Where by God�s grace* *her memories are restored* *If only I would have known* *I�d never get to say goodbye* *she didn�t know my face* *� 11/18/06* *Carole Mathys* *Dedicated to my mother who passed away* *after years of living with Alzheimer�s*

This is absolutely gut-gripping and soul-wrenching, Carole...having lost my mother earlier this year after a relatively short but severe illness where she aged 10 years and literally slipped away within a matter of weeks, I can feel so palpably your mixed emotions and pain. Yes, there comes a point when our beloved mother seems out of reach and beyond our ability to connect with her, perhaps. Alzheimer's is a mentally disfiguring disease and can be as emotionally crippling for the family who are also affected by it. Particularly if the "robbery" has been intense. I pray that you will be comforted by thoughts of her being restored and at peace, not haunted by "not being herself" any longer. And by the understanding that you will have done everything you possibly could, even though the end was painful. I believe our close relationships stand outside of time, and yours will endure at the point in your lives where you both had the most mutual love and understanding. My thoughts and prayers are with you. But this is one outstanding piece of poetry. As is said, pain makes the pen fly and I can fully appreciate why you will have returned to further develop this heart-felt write. Bless you and thank you. K xx

Sad and heartfelt Carole
I went thought that with my own mother
Who used to write every moment she had free
and they weren't many, raising seven kids
If Only I was able to read some of her
gracious wrtings
all her notes were lost every time she moved,
from one place to another
now there are none
My deepest sympathy to you and your family
she will be in my prayers

It is clear now, why you were not active at AD for a while. My deepest condolences to you, Carole. If I may intrude for a moment,; to say that I, too, have been there. I was quite a while ago, but is constantly fresh and difficult remembering my father losing to the same villainous disease.

Your offering is the first I've read that describes and allows us to be right with you, in thought and anger, at something untouchable and unidentifiable... something that takes away all love and companionship.

I know this will sound cold,but it has to be a great relief, because Alzheimer's is abominable for what it does to a person.I know the sadness and sorrow will be there for the loss, but hopefully the thankfulness too,for her sake in being freed from such bondage.
