~Lost In Shadows~

Lined up like old boots

up and down the halls

objects like useless surplus

roll out each day, appearing small

Like worn out empty containers

they stare out in space

for hours slumped in chairs

sad defeat on their face

Days become one long nightmare

as they struggle to recall

A life where they lived and loved

before age and illness robbed them all

An endless brigade of wheelchairs

is on the move each day

Forced to join the endless line

of the forgotten  and throwaways

Families leaving them there

to be tended with care

instead they’re rolled out each day

out of the staff’s hair

These sad and vacant faces

were once filled with hope and schemes

vibrant and vital individuals

they laughed, loved and dreamed

Aging plays cruel and tragic tricks
robbing memories, stealing essence too
replacing it all with an empty shell
no memories of you

If you pass a parade of shadows

wheels neatly lined up side by side

please stop, touch, smile and talk

someday it could be you...don’t hide

I can relate to this Carole, I have a friend in a nursing home and I have been there many times I see many sitting with blank stares. I even wrote a song about one very lonely lady. I would like to email you the song It is very sad. This and Standing by my window are heartfelt. Love them. John

Such a sad reality that we see among the elderly and the unfortunate...your sincerity can be felt through your thoughts of poem, and yes we should take time to give them just a small joy for a day...

nice work...

Having watched my father waste away for a number of years before he left here, I can relate to what you express here, Carole. This is very compelling. Thank you. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis

BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT... you have caught so much poignancy in your 5th stanza, Carole... "rolled out each day, out of staff's hair". If you have any experience to share or jewels of gleaned wisdom, I could use them... when the funding comes in, I may well have a job in a local doctor's surgery, spending quality time writing memoir with these elderly precious ones, helping to preserve their sense of person and identity intact. Pricks my mind and my heart. So many stop communicating in order not to be a bother... xx TYTY xx

Gaunt figures robbed of smiles. Their peronas long ago vacated with their fading memories of an era passed. Their eyes no longer vibrant with the soul of them. Alas, life has passed them by. Why oh why? Such a somber lament. Jon Michael Willey

You break my heart with this gem Carole! Reminds me of when I worked with these shadows, and you describe it to perfection! It seems nothing can stop it either with all the new meds for seniors. Makes me wonder if they are really good for us.We need to be more compassionate! Thanks for sharing,in such an informative way!

Love,
ET

Beautiful write, Carole...I love the passion you expressed for this unfortunate state of our elderly and disabled who have sadly met neglect that they do not deserve. I applaud you for this work.

Dear Carole, First, your poem is well written and touches an actual problem everywhere. There are many elderly who do not have a family near by. The social landscape has changed. Most everyone is busy with work onbligations and does not even have the time and the mean to take care of an elderly relative I know the problem from personal experience. It is nice pointing it out. Thank you for sharing this nobel cause. Emile

The definition of Nursing Homes, or as some call them "God's waiting room". How sad to be left and thrown away after a lifetime of interaction and doing for others. How little our society respects life...

Be always safe,
Karen

These, too, are God's chosen ones. It is our duty to treat them with kindness, respect and love - remembering the golden rule.

God bless you. Kathy

Age is cruel, and so are those who subject their loved ones to the horrors of nursing home care. Too many left unattended, uncared for, abused. Such horrible things; they should NOT happen!! God help those dear elderly people in nursing homes; too many suffer needlessly. (My dad has been in and out of one, but thank GOD he got the care he needed; others aren't as fortunate.)

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <
