A Collaborative Effort from the pens of Carole Mathys and Jon Michael Willey

Youthful Exuberance

In the waters of joy
youth wades euphorically
believing the gift of time
is theirs alone
upon white sandy dunes of tranquility
they walk clothed in self-possessed attire
no alarms have yet signaled
 their time of embryonic protection
will ebb like the tide's fall
with friends they engage
in light mischief
unexpectedly, without a whisper of warning
the hand of time descends
upon the suck lings of frivolity
in a calamitous moment
shattering the fragile shells
of youthful innocence
with the harshness of reality's rapier
their cocoons of security are lost
to a world that was fool hardy and light
swiftly dashed into obscurity
thoughts race, why now
feverishly they seek answers
that continually elude them
in a game of hide and seek
where is that place of security
that refuge away from confusion
the sunshine still warms their skin
flowers still scent the air in elegant hues
and the wind rustles through the trees
will this be forever
they must flee, abandoning childish beliefs
and face the place where reality
stands firmly at their sides
where youthful exuberance
is no longer their noble ally
in a precarious balance
those of troubled spirit
will find only closed doors
 and apathy

Happy New Year Carole...

This is an excellent work expressing the views of life from the exhileration of freedom found when young and to the realities of time and age combined...the emotional character is displayed well by two poets in combined poetic display through poem...

enjoyed...

great collaborative work here, Carole and John, and love the beautiful empathy and wistfulness here. I guess our exuberance can be crushed until we're old enough not to care anymore - then it returns with a flourish! :)) Nice work and we look forward to more in the coming year. My best wishes and seasons greetings. Kate xx

As we at one time referred to it all as the "awakening" and you both have done it justice, beautiful writing...

Be always safe,

Very smooth collaboration Carole and Jon, a difficult write and topic but one that your combined talents handled wonderfully. Great job.

Such a vivid portrail of the crashing of innocence whenever it happens. Eloquence and depth carried this reader back to those moments when another part of innocence was forever banished. Awesome combination of talent here. Liz

What an enlightening write about the journey we all take, hoping that somewhere along the way we will overcome the challenges and obstacles presented in young adulthood and grow into adult maturity. Some of us make it and some of us survive only with bruised egos and psyches that are forever burdened.

It is when I am moved to feel once again the embryonic protection of the scent of flowers in the air and the wind rustling through the trees that I retreat to the perfumed air of my beloved rose garden and linger 'neath the swaying hangers of my graceful weeping willow and drink deep of the moment, no matter the while.

To face the times of our troubled spirit and closed doors and apathy, there's nothing like a sacred retreat to refresh the soul, if only a garden in your mind.

Dear Carole and Jon, thank you for sharing with us your unique insight and wisdom and your wonderful way with words. "Youthful Exuberance" is a classic treasure!

With respect and admiration,
Richard

Dear Carole, How nice to see you write again. I am always impressed with your deep writing. Everyone is born with an asset called time, but no one knows the quantity available to him / her. Some are realists and some are dreamers until the day of awakening. It is only then that the human being is really born. Love, Emile

As I said under Jon's poem, this is a stunning collaboration. Why youthful exhuberance, it is knocked out of us by adulthood: doesn't have to be. Where is the wonder? The imagination? I, for one, refurse to grow up. :) A magical write, well done, Carole.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
