And let the World flood with tears

(Anatomy of an Earthquake)

Extraordinary oscillations in distant lands

Could have warned of the destruction

To palm laden paradise sands

Who’s to know? Who’s to say?

It’s a holiday…

Boxing day…

06.58

The Great Mother we’d taken for granted

another victim of our vapidity,

gave a reminder of her Wrath.

An azure sky, drenched in a sun-born-haze,

shimmered deceptively on a foam-topped petticoat

that would soon become ablaze.

Deep beneath the watery folds, away from human gaze

wretched bowels were on the move

-Compressed-

with oblique convergence. Cracking in a grating groove.

A mega-thrust

made Andaman and Nicobar dance to a thunderous tune

birthing sea furies that would bring death

and destruction soon…

In a far away land, a seismograph scribbled

an erratic etymology of an unspeakable word

with unsteady hand.

And although none heard,

it would be whispered on the wind

and upon the lips of the dying, trapped in the sand…

“Sue-Naa-Me”

People going about their daily routine – unaware,

golden beaches filled with tourists, sunning away care.

Unexpected was their plight,

it was on them in seconds like a thief in the night,

this pirate of the ocean blue

that robbed them of their lives, being sparring to few.

“With what adorning hue shall I entertain

this monster that comes our way?

For there is no time to run away.”

In moments, whole histories’ were lost

and a history made,

while humanity was left to count the cost

 The choices of abstaining fools

now lay lifeless, floating in stagnant pools.

For what was there to be done

under that ever darkening sun?

Life and detritus became as one

struggling for survival where much had gone.

Washed away…

But we are undefeated and we are strong

 resolute in our resolve

and this is just a lamentable song.

So let this dying music that fades

Sink beneath the waves

and let the World flood with tears.

Hi Paul,
You thanked me for introducing you to AD but I am so grateful you joined. You have only added value to this talented group. I want to comment on a lot more of your work but this is such an impactful poem I had to start here. I wish I could adequately express my admiration and awe for the way in which you have tackled this dreadful incident.

I woke on Boxing Day to the news. My sleep-fogged brain could not grasp the full extent of the tragedy but within hours it had become clear how devastating it all was as the death toll steadily climbed. God, how many have suffered so much through this.

Rather than ramble on here at your poetry board, let me rather congratulate you on an exceptional poem and leave it at that. Brilliant work! This really ought to be published. Have you submitted it anywhere?
Love Chuck

Paul,

A powerfully executed write with many questions as to WHY? The rumblings of heartbreaking devastation mount with each word--very well written, stunning imagery brings the images immediately to mind.

(((HUGS))) and love, karla. :(

Deep soul gripping write Paul!!

Yip Methinks Mother Nature Wants Us to be more aware of the fact that She is in control...and can so easily just take away and just as easily heal hearts again....and it's time to wake Up and love more and hate less!!

A masterfully crafted write, Paul, that contains much study and depth, along with the maelstrom of emotion that it conjures. Can almost feel the votex gathering pace and energy with this. Thank you for this considered and thoughtful peace, and for the compassion it conveys. I'm glad you're dusting off your biro and notebook!! Obviously the Army is fertile ground for bringing poetry to birth in its artistic members! A trained eye for observation is at work here... TY Kate

A most poignant write and yes we do have the tears but it could have been avoided if only the government had not been so foolish.

Paul, I found myself wiping tears, for in the midst of this beautiful write, is the sadness and devastation that took so many lives. So many unaware that their fate was about to be unleashed upon them.
Thank You.
