Having read Nordette's extremely interesting article concerning rhyme. I have decided to post this bit of lingustic fun again, written a number of years ago and tweaked slightly;.

Please excuse the differing font this sodding editor thing is poo!

Looking  For Romance

(A Poem)

You’ll find no poetic cliché here

except, perhaps, for drugs sex and beer.

A verse composition in the English tradition

a conservative view, which forces me

to adopt a more prose position.

The vulgar is for me, vernacular verbiage

renounced as garbage, you see…colloquial

language helps to develop a trope

and given enough rope,

I may commit treason and go beyond reason.

This metaphorical truth ought to raise the roof

we plagiarise the past for new poetic excellence
which doesn’t really rhyme but it ought to get a laugh.

‘Oh the brevity of it all I’m having such a ball’

is an oxymoron a rather stupid cow?

or something of a paradox?

perhaps it’s an absurd truth

or a moribund metaphor tied up with string.

Come to think of it? It could even be a synonym

‘these are a few of my favourite things’.

How’s my metre? Is it something of a repeater?

Stylistically, how does it fare?
Does it want to make you slap your forehead
and pull out your hair?

You see...alliterative linguists languish in language,
while most academics just have a sandwich.

My rigid instability is not a reflection of my ability,
although this contradiction in terms
could open a whole new can of worms.
It may at least, afford me some credibility.

So! this mercantile musicianship of mine?
Is it the correct way to compose a poem?
Commit a crime and make it rhyme
to find romance?
become the new Lord Byron
and lead everyone a merry dance.
Because if it is? I at least have a chance.

A very clever use of language. I can tell you're an Englishman, so dandy in your verse and rhyme. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and laughing and hopefully learning a thing or two. I'm mad about England, wish I lived inside of Harrod's.

A mastery of wordplay, Paul. My meter is your metre and your favourite is my favorite, so we both say aye to the literary eye.

Lol! You tickle me, Paul. I'm a rebel at heart-writing haiku in backward form(7-5-7) and all that. Would you give me bad marks for bending the rules, teach? Another write which begs to be read aloud. I did and it rocks...

I think the whole point of writing any thing, prose, poems, music - love the guitar in your bio pic ;)- or whatever a person decides to write is just that: PERSONAL EXPRESSION! You sir are a writer, I dabble in it myself,

Let's take a look see at the 'general species' of people -- none of us have the EXACT same DNA structures, none of us have the EXACT same fingerprints, none of us have the EXACT same voice, or eyes, or nose, or ears, (my but this list is getting long) none of us behave EXACTLY the same, none of us keep writing the EXACT point to an endless review like this one -- *g*

So why in the name of living G-d would we have to write our PERSONAL creative sparks the EXACT same way as people who have already wrote the exact same style as others who are not EXACTLY alive any more?

I enjoyed your 'rigid instability'...it gives you personality AND a poem that is not the EXACT same as any one elses. :) My very best to you.

LOOKING FOR ROMANCE is sewing name tags on music camp clothes! Try a whiskey break ten minutes ago! You need fresh bait for a fresh romantic involvement, an in-stock widget! Paul, this poem is guitar-riff jazzed!

Bloody brilliant... 'scuse my French poetry... but this sure scratches where I itch... or itches where I scratch... hits the spot, anyway, Sir Bard (Barred?!) My kinda tease (well, what isnt'?!) and makes me think of all the British Greats: John Cooper Clark, Roger McGough, Spike Milligan, Thomas The Tank Engine...OH and ESPECIALLY the rhymin version of Rupert Bear, done in those cute couplets... but WHEN is he gonna change his trousers???!! Hmmmm.... can just imagine you in doublet and hose... do you Morris Dance, by the way? Can picture you with that bladder-thing on a stick... how on earth did I get onto that? Must be MilkTray Deficient... TGIF Kate xx

I'll langish with my sandwich until I'm banished or vanquished...I'm not really sure of the wordsmith's appetite but this is delightfully
appetitizing for my epitaph of passion.
