Gas station on the interstate
I walk in to use the restroom
People move aside for me before they notice I'm there
I feel I'm sitting on top of the world…
I get up and flush
Advertisements, newspapers, people's conversations
Are all addressed to me personally
Clues for me to recognize myself
The cashier is obsequious,
Offers me something for free--
Sure, I don't have much money
I go outside for a cigarette
A man floats in with a tiny replica
Of the Arc of the Covenant…
and walks back out later, smiling,
Carrying his tool box
the earth is tiny, boring, and all in my imagination
this dream could dissolve
and leave me, the universe,
being
terrible lonely being…
if I were Her…
But thank God I can disengage into peaceful, dark sleep
Very interesting construction, so personal. I have enjoyed reading this poem for its stream of consciousness side and the contrasting structured feel in some parts. The way you present the different elements that lead to the title is intriguing.
