Another essay about how a young teenager felt about the world they lived in, not so long ago. Teenagers still feel this way today. This poem won several awards in the 1980's and 1990's. Teenagers related well to this poem
Our World
In contemplating this life around us, I feel a sense of loneliness Upon the barren land there lies brutality and hatred among the heartless Only those with strength against it will survive There doesn’t seem to be very much harmony and love going on now I must help recreate this barren land … Make it a prosperous and happy one Thereby letting all live with out pain and sorrow Standing on a hill Gazing over the forlorn grounds of my ancestors I pray that someone can help me rebuild it The graying skies and cold air Are the remains of a once beautiful place Known as our world.
Oh yes, being a teenager you just feel it all and then you come to find out that the strength always was right there, inside you. This poetry has deserved each award it ever received!

This is so true Helen. A lot of teens who have the strength will pull through the cracks of this world just fine, and they will be stronger for doing it too. I was 12˝ years old when my mother had me sent away. For 5˝ long years I cried endlessly, and suffered through so much abuse. But I am a survivor, and I am stronger for having been put through the ring of fire.
I also agree with Jerry too, in that our political structure seems to be crumbling because people don't hardly vote any more. We need to stand up and make our voices heard. And we must have meaning in what we say and make sense. Then our words will be heard. I am one of several transsexuals helping our TS/TG organizations educate the mainstream about pre-born sexual identity, and that we are actually born the way we are, and we have dreams, hopes, goals just like everyone else. This is another one of those "cracks" Jerry was talking about. Some people would rather see others like me dead than accept us for who we really are. This is what we're trying to do, get education in our schools about transsexual identity, and what it truly is and why we are the way we are.

I maintain that our world is stiff functioning, but cracks are appearing here and there, the sort of cracks which could eventually destroy us. Apathy being one of those cracks. Washington in-fighting being another of those cracks. Hate-spewed rhetoric on both sides of the political spectrum being another of those cracks. And last, but not least of those cracks is the idea that America is mother to be suckled until she is drained of all resources. Those are just a few of those cracks. Good poetry.
