When I was about six years old, I went to a one room school. It was a glorious year! A few years ago I went back to Vermont and went past the school. This is what I saw.
The little white schoolhouse
stands on the hill, just
down the street from an old
saw mill.
A tarnished bell hangs by
the way, a silent reminder
of another time, another day.
The class room once filled
with desks and chairs, is now
empty with no furniture there.
The playground is covered
with weeds and grass, a
rusty old swing set stands
alone with its past.
Years have brought their
changes, which happen to us all.
Lifes seasons come and go like
the autumn leaves that fall.
Every now and then, thoughts
stray back to yesterday.
I remember the little white
schoolhouse and wonderful
childhood days.
when you have wonderful memories and you can go back and see them take form again it is a wonderful thing funny how times change all but whats inside

Oh MaryGrace this touches me in a very special way...I wasn't blessed with the opportunity to actually attend the one room school, I did attend a four room school for about a year, but the school where I teach first grade has given me a wonderful opportunity to experience the one room school. In various areas of our small county stands remnants of one room school houses, a dear teacher at our school wrote a grant to have two of the more stable buildings disassembled and reassembled in the edge of the woods behind our school. The little white one room school has been restored to perfectly mimick th originals which were indentical to each other. We have the pop bellied stove in the center of the school, and thirty five of the old antique school desks. I take my students one day in April each year and we spend the entire day at the one room school, we pack our lunch, I teach from the old wooden teacher desk, with the chalk boards instead of white boards, it is cool enough that my principal builds a fire for us, we have recess outside and play red rover, tag, and red light green light, use the toilet out back and just really enjoy the day. It's a wonderful experience for everyone a chance to relive history...great write MaryGrace I've enjoyed it so much!

Awwww, reminds me of the little house on the prarie..
Went to see my old convant school. Now a housing estate, that was sad..
The Good Old Days were pretty good; I often think of them myself. And I am often saddened when I re-visit my old childhood haunts - most of them now gone or grimly boarded up.
