Design doesn't have to be obviously artistc. Much of nature's design clashes with a human sense of artistic order. It's the humans that create the clash. I try to remind myself of what my instinct (or my training) encouages me to impose - unnecessarily.
Designing
I see a lake
Emerging from a trail,
A mountain
After a curve in a road,
A view the first time,
Out a window
And they are perfect.
No tree intrudes too much,
No angle of sight
Is improved by another.
But let me sit a while,
Or worse, feel ownership
And the critic in me grows.
A guardian of beauty steps forth
And finds the flaws,
The branch to lop, the twig to snip,
The ways to make nature
More to my liking.
Why isn't it in me to let it be,
To see the tree as itself
More than as object
Of my imperfection?
