You Me and ABC

Instead of being an archipelago of identity islands, let's find the human continent where we all can live in equal satisfaction.

You Me and ABC

No resolution this year

Instead a plea for resolution

If I remember

That far back

We started with M

Shortly followed by F

A while later G

Then L B and T

Today an added Q

(Could’ve missed it before)

We all need identity

But labels slice and dice

That’s okay to start with

By now we’ve used up

A big chunk of letters

With no end in sight

Our alphabet is plainly finite

We might add numbers

Become just like

Our license plates

And still not cover

Every personal permutation

Someday our differences

May seem simply human

And we won’t need

Labels to distract us

Until that day comes

I leave you this gift

ABCDEFGHIJKLM

NOPQRSTUVWXYZ

Every conceivable description

Is contained within it

Shake, scramble and arrange

To your heart’s content

And to mine as well

Find common combination.

Yes, we are all humans and should be treated that way. I think the reason that letters have come to the fore is because people with genetic or socially different makeup than what is considered average or normal have finally banded together to come out from hiding and clearly announce that they are going to take the bullying and ignorant abuse any more. It's taken them a very long time to do that--even be able to do that.

Your poem clearly describes that there should be no need for letters to stand out. But, until they did, they hid. I think it's time, in the 21st century, that they are included as a normal part of society and not an aberration.

Still Living on my Feet by Tichaona Chinyelu

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
