A Eulogy for Richard Keith Harris, February 22, 1963 to February 10, 1990.

Green eyes,
Bright,
As an emerald lit from within and behind
by the very light of the life in his soul.

Mesmerizing,
Captivating.

If only I could hold
that image of your eyes alone,
and forget how they looked
that last time.

The light dimmed,
Green turning grey,
Tears flooding them,
hiding them.

But I know I'll never
forget.
I shouldn't
forget.
I can't
forget.

I knew what it was that I saw
in your eyes.
That your fate
and mine
were joined
permanently.

Neither of us
could escape.
Run far and fast,
to no avail.

One cannot out-race Death.

If you had stayed,
I would have warned you.
But you fled,
from me, from yourself,
from everything.

I knew you for but
a month,
and that final, ill-fated
day.

And then, no more.
Nevermore.
Never again would I see
your smile. your face.
your eyes.
