I ran into you yesterday

and though you smiled

and said, “Hello,”

I couldn’t find a response.

See, because my words

no longer belong to you.

No part of me can ever be

intertwined with yours,

and as much as I never

thought this would happen,

you’ll never see the side of me

that you once were

so privileged to know.

And when you smiled,

I couldn’t see it.

Instead I saw worlds colliding,

mountains crumbling,

oceans draining.

You stood there,

with your heart in your hand,

and your foot in your mouth –

the way you were, in the beginning,

when I didn’t know who you were.

The way you were, always,

when I never knew who you were.

I don’t love you anymore.

Wow, loved this, the ending is great. I have felt this way before, and you described it well.

Mia I understood this poem so well and yet it still cut into my heart like a knife. The death of love is so sad no matter who the participants were or what caused the killing stroke of the love that once was. I hope you do not give up on finding love again.
