In a world bend on selecting and discarding children by pro-choice, gene manipulation and all the progress paraphernalia, rearing up a Down Syndrome offspring with love and hope put a smile in God's face...as the child put one on ours!

Dedicated to my friend Eli “Deer Heart” & his mother Carol



You will remember that little kid which
with so much wit could you surprise
with a gentle reminder of God’s will,
and Carol Surber, the mother, saying,
of it all being a blessing in disguise?

That our little kid became a gentle man
was by no means a unexpected miracle,
but the acceptance that love’s giving
to all children no matter what handicaps,
because God has never rolled no dice.

When he was just about three foot tall
saw an old woman sitting alone, sad,
and he said to his mother that maybe
the old lady needed a hug and if he could
to go there and give her a little smile.

I am sure that “Deer Heart” have wings
since he was just a tiny little child,
cos God knew what He was doing then,
when blessed Carol with something so
special, a son in His image, full of love.

“It is okay Eli,” the mother reassuringly
will say, and it is to him and everyone,
if you can count Eli among your friends
you will never be out of a warmth hug or
in your face have the absence of a smile.
