There is a river of shudders
rippling down my spine
curling my back against the door
leaning into a comforting awe that
it’s well past midnight
but the wine bottle
is only half empty
the bed is still made
and your lips are moving
in my direction
with their pink pieces of you
fluttering words
that tempt
a certain longing
to live the night
like this is
the last night on earth
and it is only us now
wrapping our hands
slowly around these words
slipping away with the hour
till dawning light
whispers into my ear
and even though I don’t want her to
lay us down with
a tomorrow morning lullaby
cradling soft murmurs of the night
into the arms of remembrance
finally rocking us to sleep
I know that I cannot resist.
