Childhood Poems
Remember those poems we used to chant
When we were only children?
Now, I try to remember them but try as I may I can’t.
Some of them are best forgotten for they were really crude.
The fact of the matter is that some of them were simply downright rude.
But we sang them or recited them so many times in our youth
That now we may even find our minds replaying and that’s the truth.
Of course there are the high school cheers we used at football a game.
But, I’m afraid that some of them now make me hang my head in shame.
I wonder what Jesus meant when he said, “except ye be as children.”
I must admit some of my days of youth I remember with chagrin.
I suppose this is one more example of the forgiveness of our Lord.
Children are children and always will be and that seems like the final word.
However, as I look back I am made to realize that we were not perfect in every sense
But we were still growing and learning and that is our defense.
My point here is that God knows our hearts and he also knows we grow.
A child will grow and learn about things of which he does not know.
So when Jesus said except ye be as children, what he meant was this.
Keep growing and learning and expand yourself and always be one of his.
You have a way of stirring up the mind, Lew. Guess it's that easy-going writing style of yours. Enjoyed the poem!
God Bless
