The Plight of the Dogwood

As a kid I would often have dreams like this one. Christmas came and went and I slept through it. It is ironic that St. Valentines Day comes at a time of year when the only flowers available are hot house flowers. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it came in the spring when the hills were in full bloom? I guess it works out, though. Easter comes at that time of year. Everything is in the process of being reborn just as our Lord and Savior was reborn.

Poem Artwork

A cold and snow filled February day was proclaimed Valentines Day.
People will give roses and chocolates and send cards and letters all of which say
I love you my Dear ones… I love you every one and all on this wonderful day.

Alas, the Dogwood will never know this day for it slumbers beneath the snow.
The stories of love and of cupids piercing arrow are stories she will never know.
When the Dogwood awakens and her blossoms come and spring melts away the snow

Valentines Day will have passed and gone, missed by the Dogwood for another year.
I will save a special kiss, a token held by my heart for this friend so dear.
I will wait until she is awake and say with a loving voice that is soft but clear.

Though you slept through the day that we all celebrate as a day of jubilation
I have saved the feeling to share with you so you can join in the celebration.
As I watch your blossoms grow and unfold I will pray with great elation.

You have renewed yourself one more time to rejoin me and for this I thank the Lord.
It is true that the dogwood symbolizes the greatest love… the love of God’s only son.
It is true that when I see her blossoms in bloom I celebrate for life has again begun.

The Dogwood blossoms hold a memory of a love which death could not defeat.
Each year she is born… lives and dies to be born again, a life to repeat.
She is an annual reminder that Christ died on the cross but death could not hold him.
He died for us but he lives again, we sing of it with every Easter hymn.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Valentine's Day! Ah Lew, I remember, long ago, lovers sent unsigned cards to each other. These days, so much fuss is made on this day, one would think it was Christmas all over again. Perhaps the Dogwood has got it right...sleep through the day...when it awakes, it shares its love for many, many days...until it dies again! All the same, my friend, a delightful write.

God Bless
Lena

Do you suppose that Hallmark has a Valentine for a dogwood? I really think of Valentine's Day as a Hallmark holiday, though that may just be my way of avoiding the pressure of the day. I would much rather be surprised with flowers or some other gift of rememberance on a day when it was not feeling so obligatory; when it told me that he loves me and that he was thinking of me and just wanted to let me know. I respond so much better to wonderful surprises. Now onto the Dogwood...it is a miracle every year and it is a symbol given to us each spring in rememberance of Jesus and everlasting life.
Take care,
Sherry

Say Something Terrorible v3 by RickthePoetWarrior

My mom says ‘If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything’. Sorry mom but under the guise of poetic license I penned these beauties.
