To Norman Mailer, pugilistic writer (1923-2007)
The only major writer I ever met.

Fighting

Men are want to fight,
as is their manly right.
Tumbling down the ages.

Encouraged child to child,
to fight the more wild.
The elders see as advantageous.

For fighting marks the man.
And fighting with his hand,
seems to make him courageous.

The black eye, the cut lip,
the skinned knuckles vie,
for the weak and the strong,
where the winner lie.

but fighting takes its toll,
and makes its bloody mark,
on defeated and victor alike.

For what is fortune and what is fame,
if brutal hits upon the head,
eventually slow and lame?

The pugilistic arts have survived,
for just one aim -- to watch one man
brutalize another for gambling gain.

If I were want to kill a man,
I'd do it swift with might.
I would not do it punch by punch,
over many a hot night.

But then no bets would be played,
and no man would watch death delayed.
Mano to mano, so to speak.

While a punch drunk man lies,
bleeding in the street.

Week after week you come up with the unusual, unthought-of topics... Luckily I got all my fighting karma out early in life. In grade school to J.H.S. it was one fight after another. I was one of those stupid enough to take on a challenge by a school-mate who was often bigger and more brutal. I pulled a "draw" once with the 6th grade class 150# bully - he chipped my front tooth (still seen today) but I held my own til we both were literally dragged by the ears down to the principals office. Playgrounds were not usually "play"

Remnant from the ancient past. If in this culture a boy was initiated into manhood by some rite of passage, it's my guess he wouldn't have to "prove" his manhood through fighting, other contact sports and violence. Still, becoming a prize-fighter or soldier are two of the options afforded a young man(usually poor)to secure a future. I was on the pep squad in high school and witnessed a classmate die in a head injury during a football game. Was never quite that enthusiastic again. But I know that men require a physical outlet for all that tetesterone in their systems. Maybe the males could enlighten us females on the subject. At any rate, being brutalized for someone's profit harkens back to Roman days. This is a fine write, Ron...

pugilism, a form of the fight or flight syndrome seemingly innate to mankind, but lacking an alternative! -- never was a fan of prize fighting, street brawling, wrestling or any other form of physical violence sport (?) -- I always maintained that those endeavors bore nothing but ill for the participants and any of the surely, unthinking, observers -- an excellent work and great observations Ron - peace and love -- Jon Michael
