I think we look at love too romantically and spend too much time and money on the trivial. Love is much more than that. Love should have benefits for all and should be able to last a lifetime, or bounce back quickly from tragedy into new love opportunities. Love is all around, we just have to be free, curious and strong enough to find it right in our own backyard.

Love Is Also

Love is not for the sick of heart,

but it can be a place to start.

Where loving oneself, first,

will sate that unquenchable thirst.

Love is for the confident and bold,

strong love will never grow old.

It rests in the heart with grace,

and gives a loving embrace.

Love is not a captive thing,

tied up in a marriage ring.

Where controlled by cruel hand,

love like that can never stand.

Love is more than a passionate feel,

runs much deeper where it can heal.

Carries one well beyond the flame,

a place where there never is blame.

Love is not what romancer's write,

so trivial, superficial and trite.

It is a steadfast helpful friend,

that carries one far beyond trend.

Love is available for all who seek,

so don't be shy or way too meek.

Or love will easily pass you by,

just get on the love train and try.

I love your "take" on love, Ron. What you express toward love is incredibly so the way I see it too. Thank you for sharing your philosophical point of view on an aspect of life that I am very intimate with. Love and peace to you,

Regis. 🍁

In the hoopla that is Valentines Day its easy to get caught up in all the superficial. All those roses and candies and dinners out should be the cherry on the sundae, not the sundae itself.

Key word here, "friend"!! That means everything. To be together yet be free is the most healing and revealing feeling ever! "friend". Yes!

Love ya!

I agree with David Thompson wholeheartedly. I confess I am a rhymer myself and try to find a way to make it work. To me it just comes naturally, even rappers tend to rhyme. It's the way of the world, just like your subject of the poem. Well done.

Ron,

To me, I think this poem is one of your finest. Contrary to Mark’s thoughts regarding rhyming poetry, I like for most poetry to have a nice beat and rhyme. I’m just not very good at it. That’s why I mostly stick with free verse. So, all I can say at this point is for you to keep on rhyming.

You have covered and uncovered love beautifully. And now I'm going to have that O'Jays song running through my head the rest of the night.

Ron, I am not a great fan of rhyming poetry and rather enjoy the flow of free verse. However, regarding love. Love, I feel means so many different things to different people... The saddest times of my life was when I had no one to love. Your words in this poem cover a multitude of instances. Again, as for me, I love being married and I love what that ring means...Problem with the words we poets write is that in most instances it is our individual feelings that we put forth.... Which, really, is all that we can do.
