A story my sister told of one of her every other day visits for platelets

Together they sit in reclining chairs

Thin tubes replacing sick blood with healthy

A middle-aged equine veterinarian

And a twenty-year older retired pediatrician

The first feeling low and tearful ‘till the later

Showed excitement that finally her count was high enough

She could begin the life saving chemo

The vet now not so low, felt cheered by this woman’s grit

Together they share some stories,

Of troubled horses and children, of ways to change the world

They then decide to work a crossword

The youngest’s eyes still dim from treatment the oldest agrees to read and write

So in the course of several hours,

The questions and answers are exchanged

And occasionally they nap-then waking ask, “Where am I?”

For they do not have diseases, they have lives!

Wow. Powerful write, especially the ending. How we look at someone thinking anything but that they have a life. Thanks for sharing this one.

Yeah, I always say we ain't just names on a computer screen.
Funnily enough I've been in a battle with the govt and NHS to keep a cancer support centre open. It was set tobecome concreted over for a carport, they were just accepting their fate...NO WAY... Getting the local papers, and as much support as possible, asking for a public debate, they've backed off....

Class write...

Karen, this is a very good view of how the one's within their own unfortunate times can become even more joyfull and more happier than most who are filled with fortune....

So deeply felt and how true the sentiment! Beautifully expressed Karen! We have to overcome our treatments not the other way around. We can hope as long as we keep the right perspective as you have said here. Excellent message! My Prayers for your sister!

Eileen

ABSOLUTELY, KAREN!!!! Bravo and bravo... Thank you for recording this... It so reminds me of my thankfully brief spell in the Oncology department myself... I was daily overcome by the ordinariness of the sometimes very sick patients. Each of us was not a "disease" but someone aiming to get better quick. And we never spoke of our ailments... just about our real and very precious lives. You struck gold with this one. I can still visualise with awe some of the situations and people I met who have taught me much and showed me truly how to live... and they don't evey know or realise it. Bless you for this. I am grateful. Love and prayers for the continued well-being of your sister, too, Kate xx

You are so right, often when people are serioiusly ill we have a tendency to bury them before they die. If we the ones who love and care for them give up our hope where will their hope go. Great write and a wise lesson.

One of the most powerful truth-filled poems I've ever read. Conditions and circunstances rule our lives only if we allow them to. Whatever LIFE we have in this world is always our own to claim and live as fully as we can. Thank you, and your sister, for the reminder.

Karen, this is an exceptional write of the struggles of people going through a medical crisis. You bring this to life with an even temperament and paint a picture of those who are receiving their treatments. A tribute to those who are depending on the greatness of medicine to cure their ailments. God Bless.
