White Knuckles

Two-hand grip, knuckles clamp the wheel

The muffled sound of the tires

Tell me we are no longer touching asphalt

We now roll along on snow-pack

Drifts blow across the highway

Giving a sense of weird sideways vertigo

Then slush and mush hit my windshield

As faster drivers pass--I can barely see as it is

I turn up the radio as we climb the mountain pass,

Familiar tunes and rhythms calm my nerves

A long trail of lights creep behind in my trail

And my precious cargo sleeps in back, unaware

What is usually done in an hour

Has now taken two and a half

I slide a bit past the turn to my town

And into my carport as Taylor Swift sings me home

Not sure if it is the children or the horses asleep in the back . . . Doesn't matter . . . The poem grabbed me, especially since I recently read of transporting all those horses . . . Loving the book . . . Saddness, but life is unforgiving to some unfortunates . . .

The tension in this poem is palpable making me recall driving home in the snow with my kids in the car, when we weren't expecting bad weather. So glad to read your last line;-)Great poem!

Dear Karen, great poem and a great story. This reminds me my mare Carmela, she saved my life. She was trained by the Americain army. I bought her as she had a bullet in her foot which was not removed. During the cold season she limped. She was my best friend, and I made a song for her; she loved it. One day a few shots came from the mountain and she immediately lay down on her side. I fell, went unconscious. When the shooting stopped, she came toward me and she pulled me to safety. Emile

Glad you're home safe and sound. I've only driven in really bad snow a few times, thank goodness. Yep, it is a while knuckle experience. Your poem had me on the edge waiting for the end. Rather felt like a wide awake passenger.

God bless you. Kathy

It seems we are with you on these rides. A front row seat to a truck drivers daily dilemma.
