I wrote this after reading jerry Pat Bolton's Misdemeaners and Felonies--an incredible experience, his story touched me...
Little Southern boy with a tow head of hair Runs home for comfort to be told he is loved Instead he is stripped and put into a tub Scrubbed clean to blood by his faux mother's cruel hand Turn the page
Adventures abound as the young boy grows Fantasies to weave, and secret places to hide But deeper secrets were so painfully hidden And burned to the core with never an answer Turn the page
Into his teen years, the mother so cruel Dressed her son in bruises and bloodstains too And the father who should have been the young man's hero Cowered and cringed in her heavy handed wake Turn the page
Soon with signature to paper, to get the hell out of town The army became his ticket, or so he had imagined Discharged and AWOL, into a new hell he crawled And he wallowed there, for a time at least Turn the page
So lost and alone, in life's fight for survival The boy was desperate, he needed to belong But no one was there to give the foothold he needed And those who reached out he soon left behind Turn the page
As years march on, the boy more than grown Can now find the good that was always within He does all that he knows to make needed amends Some questions still haunt him, though less of a burden Now close the book gently-its not yet the end
WOW, Great job! The storyline was outstanding as well as the character developement. Abuse is all to common and difficult to deal with for years. I like the positive ending.
I thgought it might be necessary to have read the book to fully appreciate this Karen, but no, you have taken the essence of the story and condensed it into a few stanzas while retaining all the emotional impact. Well written.
Karen you did a wonderful job of putting this sad story into such a few lines, All too often children suffer at their parents hands trying hard to please them and always looking for acceptance. It is good that he had so much good within his heart and soul. No child should have to go through this. Thank you for sharing.
Exceptional write Karen! This goes deep into the heart and soul since we all can relate to his life, from one or another we have known. Some have it so hard, makes us wonder why the parents ever
had children. it seems to run in families...we should find ways to stop it.
Karen, Wow, this is a great write...sad & heart rendering for a young boy to live such a life. Life can be savage to some children and they never have a chance to feel secure and self-confident. You've portrayed this boy's life so well.
So very "close to home" I think in
many ways to a lot of people (me included)
You can never seem to please your parents
and it does haunt me still today. I've
came to a point of just choosing not to believe
the lies I was taught. Throw out that garbage,
is my solution.
Wow you "explained" the "book" of a lifetime in a few lines!!
Yip Jerry still has ALOT to offer....thank you for sharing!!

Being a bit of an empath, I had to read this poem in pieces. You've captured so strongly the pain of a young child that I couldn't take it all in at once. Despite being grown, I know this little boy remains with him - as does unresolved pain. All this comes through in your words. You are very talented.
Very strong story with a good lesson in it as well...this boy could have ended up all wrong it was only his inherent goodness that delivered him in time.

Karen, this is absolutely wonderful and I like how each stanza ended with "turn the page." The last stanza was my favorite. An excellent write, and a nice tribute to Jerry!
This collection of poetry addresses the nature of time, reflections on the natural world, the difficulty of loss,
contemporary social issues and gratitude for life.
Stay well and keep writing.
