It is inevitable in the world we live in,
That at the tender age of six at school, My granddaughter (along with kindergarteners everywhere), Was made acutely aware of the dangers lurking in her world.
This afternoon, and very animated,
She told me of the safety drills performed that day in class.
She spoke of the dangers of fire and earthquakes,
And matter of factly told me, "Three rings together mean there's a man with a gun."
Now I remember fears and drills in my early years at school.
Nuclear fall-out shelters are where our school drills led.
I had nightmares when reading 1984,
With visions of 'Big Brother' knowing my secret terrors.
So things have changed, they seem more personal,
A man with a gun bent on killing,
In order to avenge his own miserable life,
Hits closer to home, to me, than all those threats of communism.
I hear you!!! It boggles my mind that our children and grandchildren are being taught to beware of strangers. When I was growing up there were no strangers, only people you had yet to meet. What is our world coming to?
So very true Karen. I too remember the drills for possble attack, stockpiling extra food and water in our celler just in case! It was better to be a child back then . Todays world has too much violence, hatred , and self destruction. Good and interesting write!...M

I remember when I was little and the only safty drills we had were, fire drills and tornado drills where we hid under the table. We thought the drills were fun since they got us out of the building into the fresh air. I don't suppose we thought a fire would ever happen. But I do remember being afraid of the weather, tornatoes and lightening and things like that. I can't imagine being six years old and having to fear that some one might actually walk in and shoot you. So sad that it is a real possiblity in our day and age.
Living here in CO, I know and feel this all too well. How sad that our children have to know this kind of terror. Sad write but very well done. Love, Bonnie
No kidding! I grew up right next to communism's door and I still thnk we didn't have near as much to worry about (on a personal level) as kids do nowadays.

It's a very disturbing change indeed. We continue to fragment because we don't have any gathering skills. Too bad and the worst is that we can be sure that this trend will continue unless we change our value systems. Thank you. Tom

yea it is a sad statement of fact that the world is not improving or become safer with the advent of science and teachnology, if anything it is just closing in on us more.
