One of My Kids

As the year comes to a close, i will be sending children on to high school that i have had for 4 years-i will miss them

One of my Kids

Before that day when you entered my classroom,

You really didn’t matter at all to me,

I didn’t even know you existed.

But once you arrived here in all your glory,

Then you were MY student, one of My kids,

Special because now I knew you,

And from there, a connection began.

I knew the sound of your step in the hall,

The sound of your laugh when you were happy,

And a different chuckle when you were mischievous.

And most important, the sound of your silence,

When all was not well in your world.

I will miss you when you are no longer here,

In this classroom where we spend our days,

Or in trouble waiting for the lecture you know will come,

For we have become connected, you and I,

I will always want to know how you are.

I wish there were more teachers like you in the world...what a different place it would be...
I had a few teachers who cared like you do when I was growing up. They will always hold a special place in my heart.

This says so much about your huge and loving heart. Anyone can be a teacher by going to university and getting a degree but only someone who loves can be a developer of young lifes...you are a beautiful person Karen.

I just visited with an old high school teacher a few weeks ago who I'm sure felt as you did while we sat across from each other. Such a lovely bond, and a beautifully expressed poem. Michelle

For we have become connected, you and I,
I will always want to know how you are.

Often a wonderful connection, and penned only as a teacher could. My spouse has kept connections with many of her students over the years.
