“By the content of their character”

What more would any parent want,

But to raise children with deep character,

Upstanding values, and responsible attitudes,

And to live in a society, a nation,

Who judged them on such things?

I believe that Dr. King was driven deeply,

By his great love for those four babies he was raising,

As well as his depth of desire to make positive changes,

In himself as well as in his beloved people.

And if we so desire, as Dr. King expressed,

For the outside judgment of our children,

To rest on their character rather than race,

I would think that we would focus more,

On building great character in our children.
