“I Have Common Sense”

Her teacher laid out her work,

Pretty pictures and handwritten notes,

Reading scores and mathematical calculations,

Then information about an upcoming science project.

Her scores were high, all in the upper percentiles,

Such that they skewed the other’s test taken.

Then the teacher spoke words, which caught my grandchild’s fancy;

“She also is lucky because she has common sense.”

She then turned to me with her beautiful teacher smile and said,

“Are you scared?”

I was immediately taken aback but then thought,

“Perhaps it is a bit overwhelming.

We rose to leave; Elyssa received her token sucker,

On our way out I said, “So what do you think?”

She skipped away, a happy little girl saying,

“I have common sense!”
