Lillian

My friend Lillian has gone away,

She’s lost her battle with cancer,

The sweetness of her spirit will long be remembered,

Thoughtful of others in spite of her own struggles,

She never failed to ask about my sister.

A foster parent she was known as “Grandma”,

By the boy David who was in her care,

I came to know her as David came to my class,

An introverted and angry boy.

We worked together, Lillian and I,

To find the soul in this troubled boy,

Abuse and neglect had left him sadly broken,

But the love she showed him brought steady repairs,

Now he is grown and there are many more,

Who experienced the power of her healing love,

She was a friend to me, a very dear soul.

Missing her as I drove for home,

I made a right turn but looked to the left,

What I saw took my breath away,

A rainbow tipped wing peeked out from the clouds,

And, Lillian, I thought of you and smiled.
