First Snow

I hadn’t spent time dreading it,

Nor did I feel excitement for its arrival.

But, in the darkness of night it came,

And in the morning light I saw the blanket of white,

Pulled up and tucking in my mountain home.

So, in spite of myself I was awed,

By the beauty and sense of magic dressed in white,

And my belief in what is pure and good was renewed,

In this crazy mixed up world.

Isn't it amazing the feelings that the first snow conjures up?

Melancholy, sweet, affirming and alive, Karen. 'Crazy mixed up world, indeed. Snow is an element of Earth. Thank god. Loved the photo! Wish I was kicking up My heels.

mountain home sounds real cozy and peacefull Karen, far from the maddening crowd, I see myself there with you, snowed in with the fireplace burning warm and hot, hugs

I agree that freshly fallen snow is very symbolic; it never ceases to awaken deep feelings within me as it has done since childhood. Thank you, Karen. Love and blessings,

You've caught the magic of the first snow! What a lovely and serene poem this is. The picture is wonderful, too. I read the poem the second time as though the horse was the one thinking these lovely thoughts on finding the snow in his pasture.

It does kind of sneak up on you, doesn't it? And then overstays its welcome sometimes.

That very first snow of the season is so beautiful, but it gets old fast. That's why I'm a 20 year resident of Florida. This piece brings back nice visions though. Thanks Dick
