I see frightened flinching faces,
ringing out shots begin in succession,
teenagers skedaddle in a blanked hush,
far-off the voices of policemen shouts.
Sirens scream and cars careen,
adolescents jam-packed vehicles,
fleeing the scene of a lifeless youth,
lying beside a new motorcycle.
I see rescuers cover his body,
snatched away in the blink of an eye,
maybe, a noble inventor, surgeon, President,
gone, gone, not a second to utter goodbye.
Snuffed out quicker than a fly by a swatter,
jerked from parents who nurtured and prized him,
lost...lost...emptiness and torment,
memories are all left to inhabit them.
It's not fair...no, not fair...to leave parents forsaken,
while those committing these crimes go free,
sooner or later taking another life in vain,
sentence another family to suffer and grieve.
Futile acts of killing our immature teens,
leaving them sprawled dead in our streets,
like cattle slaughtered for market,
by hook or by crook we've got to teach,
the youths of our land to desist,
steer clear of rebellious scalawags,
waiting to sentence them to death.
How vividly you describe the scene of this dreadful accident, Barbara. Sad indeed for those left behind. Giddy teens are a hazzard on our roads. Their on-the-spot reactions are now swift because of their immaturity to respond in a crisis. Many innocent people end up as victims. It's a sad state of affairs, and so unfair!
I agree too much violence today, our youth seem to be targets with the school shootings, gang violence, drugs, drunk drivers...this list could go on and on. Society today seems to be far too accepting of horrific acts of violence against our young and old alike. It seems to me that too many people are afraid that they will offend their own children by guiding them, teaching them, and many times just telling them "no" you're not going there, or no you are not doing that...parents and those who are in authoritative positions are to liberal. We need to paint the entire picture of what could happen, the what if...rather than sugar coating life and allowing the children to be the boss, we as parents, teachers, etc. are still in the drivers seat...nothing wrong with disciplin when administered correctly. Great write, one that I am very passionate about myself, I see far too many kids going down the wrong path with parents who really just don't care or are too busy to notice, the youth are the one's who suffer and pay the consequences. Bravo on this write very thought provoking and powerful!
