Spying rooks sit in the shade gasping for air in the arid heat...
The sun is rising
along the twisting dirt road up to the house,
like a child
sit down in a spelling bee contest.
Their brown faces
show signs of parched expressions
curled yellow bonnets need ironing.
Lean bodies tilting to the left and the right
would like to stand tall and proud.
Limp leaves like arms hang at their sides.
Spying rooks sit in the shade
gasping for air in the arid heat.
The sun widens
blisters the earth
causes purple-headed thistles to blacken.
The earth's cracking and waterholes are empty.
Clumps of russet moss hug the trees
forgetting they were ever pea green.
Across the way
a turtle shambles cross the scorching road
looking for a cool pond.
I would like to open a faucet but,
someone greater is in charge of the controls.

Sounds just like a lot of our Outback towns here in Australia.
A well painted picture Barbara.
Excellent write! Nice to read it too, with west Texas winds blustering outside, whistling and roaring. The imagery of this work took my mind off of the dreariness of the day outside.

Reminds me of one of my first short stories. In Malta, summer can be terrible. If we get a high temperature spell, then we're in trouble. It would be swimming most of the time with plenty of sunblocks. Lovely descriptive poem I can relate with. Victor
