The Life She Chose

This is the life she chose, it's solitary to the Appalachian Mountains...

Her white hair and flowered dress
pokes fun at the sun and trees.
A puffy face...
shakes as she laughs
and swats bees landing on her forehead.
She fans herself with a paper bag,
points a fly swatter as she talks.

Her bare, calloused and swollen feet,
primed the pathway to the spring house.
She likes working the earth:
inhaling the fresh air,
the peacefulness of the solitude,
while holding onto her past memories.
This is a life she chose,

it's solitary to the Appalachian Mountains,
a place she feels secure and content.
Shades her face with tired hands:
squints at a sliding sun, picks up a water bucket,
saunters down the path to the spring house.
Bends now and then...
picks milkweeds from the trail,
disappears in the shadows of the woods.

A most beautiful offering dear Barbara and i love the simple but cleverly artistic way you have depicted the life of this woman. The environment in which she lives and the way she interacts with her surroundings is extremely wonderful. I guess this lady is you. Love

Awe, what a warm and inviting write...you've described my mamaw, she was such a warm woman with so much to give, just as your offering myf friend! The life that you've penned sounds so much like my growing up, I would love for times to be simple again, I wouldn't even mind going back to the outhouses, well not too much! I love the earth and working in it, I love the smell of the farm after a spring shower, I love the Appalachian mountains, I love my ancestors and heritage. I enjoyed this so very much, gentle, precious and woman...this is a keeper for me! Simply beautiful my friend!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

At peace and one with nature...has a nice feel to it. Perhaps she has indeed chosen exactly what is right for her. Great write, Barbara. It was easy to imagine this precious woman with white hair and flowing dress.

Love and peace

A lovely, descriptive poem about an unknown person who chose the life she lives. Those mountains seem to vibrate with mysteries of nature. There must be peace there, too.

Such a unique and thoughtful character study, Barbara. So gracious and dignified and yet full of life and intrigue, perhaps. I would love to know more about this wonderful woman. She sounds special and delightful. TY Kate xx

this is beautiful--a choice made for a life-a choice we all make--just many different choices out there-to be happy in that choice is the key

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu
