It's been a long night...
I see the moon sneak into the sky.
A draft wraps my shoulders,
bats swarm...desires a meal,
flinching as one swoops at me.
Loneliness smothers my soul,
she left today for college,
her smile left imprints in my memory.
She's an image of my younger self,
dark brown eyes, golden hair, and plump lips.
Our bond...friend, listener, love, and Mother,
we were joined in our hearts.
I'll face tomorrow...
alone, challenged, aimless and painful,
lots of years we've spent together.
It stings the core of my soul,
freeing her to a world of turmoil and ambiguity,
I opened my wings to watch her soar...
nurturing, love, and advice prepared her mind.
She flew like a mighty eagle,
leaving a sunbeam of light,
knowing she was ready to face life.
This poem speaks from my heart...as I gave freedom to my daughter to live her own life.
A heart touching write Barbara. Its hard to let go , but its somethimg we must do if we truley love them. Each time one of my kids left, I went thuogh the "parting syndrome"! Blessings .....M
A lovely capture of what mothers go through when faced with letting their daughters go. This very stressful emotional time is beautifully described in your poem, Barbara. You handled it well, in an exquisite last verse!

Wow! What a beautiful write my friend...this indeed speaks multitudes of love, admiration, compassion, fear, pain, and joy from the heart of a mother. It is so hard to let go of our children...even though we've taught them well...the world is a mightly big place! I remember the heartache I felt when my son left home, he was my oldest and my first to marry...I remember thinking this must've been how my mom felt when we married and left home, one by one. I sat on the banks of the creek for days each evening trying to cope with the thoughts of my baby...my son, my first child not only moving out, but marrying as well. Finally two weeks before the wedding my husband reminded me that he was going to get married with or without me...reality kicked in, and I realized that it wasn't a fly by night phase, my son was getting married! Next week my wonderful 27 year old baby boy and beautiful daughter inlaw will celebrate their eight year wedding anniversary with their adorable two year old daughter! My daughter of twenty two finished her edcation last year while going to school off campus which I was thankful for...anyway she got married several months ago to a wonderful young man. Now my home seems much larger, quiet, and sometimes lonesome. I do have more time to spend with my husband and home projects...and the one of the perks I will enjoy tonight, one of my granddaughters is spending the night with me tonight. We are going to have snacks, movies, and a great time! My thoughts and prayers will be with you my friend....
Blessings,
Joyce B.
I don't think there is a hardeer thing in this world to do than to let your child grow up. All we do is hope the make the right decisions and when they don't be there so they have a softer fall. Beautiful poem.

Must have been a pianful moment especially as you say in this world of ambiguity. But what has to be will be. I pray a lot for my child and her family that God may take care of them. There's nothing we can really do.
Barbara,
Your poem brings tears of joy to my eyes. I remember the day my youngest daughter went to college...It is bittersweet. Letting go with the knowledge that they will be wonderful people is completion to our nurturing and love bestowed on our children...Know you did the "best" you can, and let them go...Freedom to explore and make their own way in this world with the love and safety of their roots.
It's always hard to cut the apron strings and let you children face the world and leave there mark on it but as painful and as anxious as it can be it is a necessary part of of life.
