Their she sits like a prima donna.
A hat covers iridescent black hair,
somber ebony eyes stare into outer space,
a Victorian high collared dress,
embraces her head in a perfect set position,
threatening her tight drawn corset.
She hate's the tightness around her waist,
making her voice appear weak as she speaks.
Julian's picking her up at eight bells...
must act like a lady and not a sloven.
The butler spy's and reports to Mother...
she's interested in all Emily's goings-on.
Mother scrutinizes the suitor for a favorite,
looking for someone from a prominent family.
Emily must marry whom Mother chooses,
regardless of the emotions in her own heart.
It's an on-going family birthright tradition...
no one has the option to refuse the chosen.
Emily's true love waits in the shadows.
A moment in time will come for them to disappear...
fulfilling the commitments to love, honor, and obey,
each other as long as they both shall live.
Breaking a tradition long over-shadowing,
a family with controlling unpleasant customs.
Way To Go, I say... And not a moment too soon! Control and overbearingness just presses ALLLLLLLLLLLLL me buttons, Barbara, so long live true love and it's freedoms and faithfulness to and of the heart! Heart-pounding stuff! TY Kate xx
This just moved like a novel. Pulled the reader right into the fear , fustration and want of a young woman's heart which belongs to family tradition and not her own. Very interesting poem.
Barbara,
So old fashioned, but, sometimes the choices that are out of our control leave us with satisfaction knowing it wasn't our fault!!!! Life without guilt of making a wrong choice in the area of the most important part of your life...something to think about.
What a terrible custom...I remember a young man that my mom always thought I should date, and often teased me about marrying him...as she was a friend of his parents, and their parents friends of my grandparents and so on...boy am I glad that we didn't have such a custom and were given the freedom to choose whom we wanted! This guy turned out to be a dud! with a capital D! I tease my mom about it now, and also tease her about how she told my husband of twenty eight years now no when he first asked if he could go out with me. She also told him no the second time, he wouldn't give up and finally she agreed...the rest was history! Now she says I couldn't have hand picked my children's spouses...I laugh and say she sure couldn't! Great write my friend, you've expressed it well, a compelling write about a lifestyle that many through history endured and suffered through! Well done!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

She must elope to Gretna Green as the English say. Terrible custom whichever country it comes from. Victor
"a family with controlling unpleasant customs".
My whole extended family was just this way for many years. What they couldn't control they would try to destroy. They tried with me - they failed!
This is an excellent write dear Barbara- reads as the prologue for a novella. Wonderful imagery! Blessings ...

Questions, unquestioned discoveries, and answers in parable and rhyme…. This collection records a journey starting with a 1960s retrospective and the first man on the moon, moving to a new millennium welcomed in with a terrorist spin, family crises,
