A Duty Of Honor

They call it a passing thing...

Gusts grab my skirts tail,
his hand clings to mine,
they call it a passing thing...
how does another discern what a heart and soul feels?

My heart pounds as he grips my fingers,
we've longed to show our love, passions, desires, fulfillments,
achieving highs we both seek through our fevor,
realeasing peaks of enjoyment and ousting the fire.

It's a no, no, here in this town...
cannot expose families to shame, gossip, a baby,
have to remain pure and worthy of a good name,
won't allow myself to become damaged flesh.

We hold onto each other,
kisses...feverish, exhilarating, and exciting,
it's been three years since our first kiss,
Robert's been understanding and caring.

They call it a passing thing...
these feelings we endure, this hunger we feel,
nineteen, too young for marriage and commitment...they say,
must not soil my fleshy tissue.

Robert leaves next week for college,
I depart for a university up north,
our kisses burst with enthusiasms and cravings...
powerless to fulfill our longings...a duty of honor,
time and separation holds our destination in their hands.

They call it a passing thing.

Oh, the joy and wonder of youth--and the poignant feelings!!! The title is perfect and makes me remember my days of duty to honor--to my mother and father. I felt duty-bound to live up to their teachings.

Excellent!! Love the way you have used repetition to hammer in the point. Hammer is the wrong word. Subtler than that. . .but very strong and effective. Sad, how ships pass in the night. . .and day. . .isn't it? How we let society tell us who to be and what to do, whether it is right for us as individuals or not. Point well taken!! May memory keep you warm, and. . .someone new -- or old -- to love!:) 'Pea' <3

Always the good-byes that get us all. The lingering of love and the distance in between. You have penned this so very well, I applaud you....

Barbara this is a most beautiful poem
It sounds to me that this sad emotions
are from sometime back
They say set it free and if it comes back to you
Than it was not a passing thing!
Absolutely beautiful!
Love Peace and hugssss....Morning Star

A duty of honor sounds like a time from long ago, and reminds me of what is pure and right. Whether it is or isn't a "passing thing" I've always trusted and had faith that what happens is ultimately what was best for me and thee.
