Questions of a Whale

Are whales wiser than we are?

Poem Artwork

Oh, monarch of the seas, an interview;
I have some questions I would ask of you.
You have a giant brain, but are you wise?
Your thoughts, are they as vast as cloud-strewn skies?
Where are your goals, where are your lofty aims?
You swim, you dive, you breach, all fun and games.
Where are your laws, and where your proclamations
That tell relationships between whale nations?
Where are your troops that show an iron fist?
Without an army how can peace exist?
Where are your prophets, where oh where your sages
Who seek life's meaning and explain its stages?
You frolic on the waves in pods and schools,
And yet you do not teach, you have no rules.
To sum it up, you lack philosophy,
And revel in a glorious anarchy.
We humans, with our rule of law, resent
The fact that you with none are so content.

This is a great piece! They do have a grace that illuminates and puts us to shame - Christine

Perhaps whales are not so content as we might think they are from your poem. Perhaps they find the sounds coming from ships to be excruciatingly painful and interrupting their communication with each other over great distances. Perhaps they are not happy with getting tangled in nets and having propellers cut their flesh like knives. Who knows what those massive brains are thinking. That they do not act like us with their flippers, does not make them any less intelligent.

a beautiful piece in which a human being treads on the whale's neck shamelessly, as he usually does with his characteristic of 'the Head of Nature.' Cheers, alex
