Hummingbirds are docile creatures--except sometimes with each other. It's the male (usually) that becomes aggressive. Occasionally one will be blessed with an overload of testosterone. Then the fireworks begin. Some see parallels in the human race, but that seems unlikely ...
In your ruby cravat and frock of green
What hormone or gene made you mean?
There you sit, so cocky, so proud,
You’ve chased away the hummer crowd
From the red and yellow nectar stash
In a hellbent Kamikaze flash.
If any dare hover at your private well
You’ll bomb ‘em quick, give ‘em hell
And make damn sure they never taste
But leave right now with all great haste
Or you’ll pierce ‘em with your sharp beak
And pull their feathers ‘til they squeak
And wildly chase them well off site —
Such an awful little mighty mite —
Zoom back to your favorite spot,
Insufferably arrogant little tot,
Survey the scene with eagle eye
For more hummers passing by,
And continue, in a jealous rage,
Your tiny-tyrant turf war to wage.
