Roads of Life I’ve traveled down many roads in life Some good, some bad, some that left me lost, I have reaped the harvest of my maker Sewn my seeds at sometimes-great cost.
I have met with over-powering obstacles Presenting challenges for me to surpass My willfulness to live my life to the fullest Sometimes gave me a kick in the ass.
I have made many foolish mistakes So many that I can no longer count They served as lessons of life well learned Steps toward problems I was forced to mount.
I’ve made enemies and friends aplenty Some who loved, some filled with ire and hate The ones who made the biggest impression on me Were those who lovingly guided my fate.
Growing old reduces the numerous chances Of making too many thoughtless mistakes But the past ever returns to haunt me With bitter memories like poisonous snakes.
I keep reminding myself that retrospect Can’t change the direction of roads I took Or erase the wrongs made in the moment That felt right through the eyes I then looked.
I have learned that knowledge is not swift or insightful It comes like a thief in the night at its own pace Resembling a blind man clumsily feeling his way On a rocky road where no one wins the race.
From early youth into adolescence and adulthood Every experience presents a moral and ethical choice A skill children need to be taught from an early age Enabling reliance upon that conscientious inner voice.
I cannot fault the mistakes of my past Which served as stepping-stones to a better life Inspiring me to do better by stepping up to the challenge Of overcoming inevitable strife.
I’ve learned mistakes can never be undone It would be foolish to even try But if used as a textbook toward mature growth Worthwhile knowledge is gained until the day you die.
Very inspiring to me especially, I never regret my background or the mistakes, I learned from them and it made me a better person too. I can cope with the mistakes of the past cause not so many creep up on me now. Experiences are always needed in this life, good or bad.
At the beginning, we all seem to have been given a lifetime pencil with an erasure. Many of us have long ago worn out the erasure before we learned from our past to not make the same mistake so many times over. Once in a while someone comes along who points out the obvious to us, and we embrace the epiphany with a startled, "Oh, yeah! Right." And then go right on repeating our errors.
If life is a learning experience, many of us aren't very smart.
As usual, Jeanette, you offer us profound truths in simple terms. Maybe one day we'll listen.
Nice photograph, very scenic especially with the fog. Your words speak volumns of wisdom. No, usually we can never undo what happened before, but we can learn and move forward from there. Fantastic write....
Embrace the past, fear not the future, but enjoy the present! Live in the moment and savor each minute, each hour and each day...
Very beautiful poem Jeanette, I enjoyed reading this..

Jeanette, this is such a wonderful poem, I can sense a truth and honesty about every word it contains. We all make mistakes in our lives but one thing for sure we can face those mistakes and make a better life for ourselves by knowing we did wrong. Your voice is strong in this piece and spoke to this reader.
I see myself on this road. Your words match each turn in my life's journey, EXACTLY!
"...I’ve learned mistakes can never be undone
It would be foolish to even try
But if used as a textbook toward mature growth
Worthwhile knowledge is gained until the day you die." My motto in life, and you've stated it so well.
Blessings,
Kathy

A poem of wonderful wisdom and rflections. A pleasure to read this work today.....made me contemplate the future and recognize the past. thanks for this journey.
With very best regards,
Chris
I think there are many who can place themselves in this insightful poem. It may be difficult to forget the past mistakes but forget them we must and concentrate on not repeating them, this then is wisdom.

Sometimes gave me a kick in the ass.
How true for most of us, and using our mistakes as a textbook, is probably very sage advice.
Excellent.
