Halloweens of the Past

I as I sat and listened to the students describing their plans for Halloween I realized that my memories of Halloween were a bit different than those today...

Halloween's of the Past

The Halloween's of the past...
different than those today,
Candy was appreciated...
each piece savored,
Candy then was limited...
we ate every piece...even the root beer flavored.

Halloween costumes were not bought at a store...
But created from a master plan,
A costume we dreamed of for days, sometimes weeks.
made from scraps, yarn, makeup, and torn sheets.
One year a tinman we created from aluminum foil,
and discarded pots and pans.

We walked within our own neighborhoods,
trick or treat we would shout!
carrying our small load of goodies,
we didn't stay very late...
from all the fun we were worn out.

Dividing our candy discarding our costumes...
placing our candy in our secret places,
and washing the makeup from our faces.

Pulling the covers up to our chin...
and turning out the light,
dreaming of the events of the long awaited night...
feeling sad because it would be another year before we'de go again.

Times change, don't they? I didn't know Halloween when I grew up, but the same holds true for all major holidays...

I remember making my own costumes. Halloween candy appeared in the store a week or so before the event, and you bought it the day before. My mother went through my bag and threw away unwrapped stuff, until I learned to eat it or stash it in my pocket. Thanks for a nice read.

Asthe famous song goes my friend: "Those were the days..." Now it's all commercialism. Victor

This is such a wonderful recall of those times Joyce. How we all miss them. I feel sad for the children today who know not what they are missing. Perhaps through you some will learn of the good Halloween days.;-)

I have great memories of Halloween as well. All of the candy--the fun in dressing up and trick or treating. Ahh...to remember! Wendi

Hallowe'en used to be innocent fun, instead of wondering about the dark undertones underneath. People didn't have to worry about kidnappers, murderers, molesters...sad. Thank you for bringing back the good times....great poetry, Joyce.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

We made our own costumes too.
And the only yard decoration would be a pumpkin or maybe some corn stalks if you knew a farmer. Too commercial now, though I love seeing the kids dressed up.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Enjoyed reading.

And Halloween was safe. This is a fine description of Halloween us oldies fondly remember.

What I have read of your poetry seems to capture the wistful nostalgia of old fashioned values of the past. 'Halloweens of the Past' is no exception. The way you describe this holiday in the past makes one think that modern life isn't as fun as yesterday, even though in the Old Days - life as you capture it seemed so much more simple then.

Keep your superb poetry flowing.

You brought back some wonderful memories, Joyce. That's how it was when I was a child, too. Excellent poem.
